HAPINOY:
"Hapinoy" is a play on the words "Happy" and "Pinoy", the colloquial word for "Filipino". The Hapinoy Store Program focuses on the sari-sari stores in the Philippines (sari-sari is the Filipino word for “many or various kinds”), small neighborhood or village convenience stores or retail-based outlets that sell sundries, mostly basic commodities. Sari-sari are usually located within or as an extension of the storeowner’s home. The Program partners with storeowners, women micro entrepreneurs called Nanays, the (Filipino term for “mothers”).
The Program aims to help Nanays:
Under the Hapinoy Plus Program, value added goods and services will be incorporated to the regular operations of Hapinoy Community Stores. This aims to increase traffic to the community stores and boost the nanays’ profit margins.

The fisherman breakthrough innovation prize
The Fisherman Breakthrough Innovation Prize was a three-way partnership with the Fisherman Foundation, Hapinoy, and the SEVEN Fund. It was a business plan competition opened to all who aspired to alleviate poverty through new and viable business ideas and innovations that would be offered through the Hapinoy Sari-Sari Store Network. The competition was a call for ideas for new products / services that women Sari-Sari store owners can sell to increase their income and improve their livelihood. The competition had over 100 entries from around the world. 12 finalists were selected with ideas ranging from solar rain water filters, garbage turned to goods, all the way to mobile stores via bicycles. Cash prizes went out to the top 3 business plans.
WINNING BUSINESS IDEAS:
1st Prize - First prize goes to a simple refillable bottle that customers purchase and pay a small fee to get it refilled with shampoo. Traditionally, many poor people can only afford individual sachets of shampoo. These sachets cost more in aggregate than purchasing a big bottle of shampoo and contributes to plastic waste to the environment. By offering this new option of refillable bottles, Nanays would be able to offer lower prices for refills to consumers while still making a large profit margins due to bulk bottle purchases. At the same time, the new offering would reduce overall waste in the environment. The concept was immediately piloted starting with 1 Hapinoy Community Store and eventually increased adoption.
2nd Prize - The Sari-Sari Store Jr. concept is a mobile roving store made possible via a delivery vehicle and serves as an extension of the main store. A storage box is built into the back of a bicycle that allows for the selling of store goods in more remote areas. The box also provides space for advertising to use as another source of revenue. This new concept had since been rolled out to the top 10-15 Hapinoy Community Stores.
3rd Prize - The third prize was a VOIP call station concept that allows a Hapinoy store to rent out a computer station with VOIP phone and internet capabilities to allow customers to make calls abroad at cheap rates. Stores would charge customers per minute for calls with different rates for each location. This third concept was met with a lot of enthusiasm by Hapinoy since there's a big market for Filipinos to make calls to family members who are living and working abroad.
